It is 9.39am on bank holiday Monday. My rubbish has just be collected. I wasn't expecting that. Did any tenant know of this welcome addition to the rubbish collection service?

Also, congratulations to Mantilla for making recycling so simple: Am I alone in my amazement at the relatively small amount of landfill-destined waste one has to put-out, once one has separated it from the recyclable?
Communal hot-water; own-pumped drinking water; regular doorstep recycling collections; low-food mile herb production - wow, I never knew we were all so green!
However, I suspect that few will be paying much attention to the recent edict dictating that household waste must only be put into our hatches on the diarised collection days:
One of the reasons Dolly Square had nightly rubbish collections from Day 1, was that they enabled its owners to provide tenants with remarkably tiny kitchens (many without natural ventilation) that did not have to provide accommodation for accumulated rubbish.
I suspect that quite a few non-neighbourly decisions will be made regarding "do I store my whiffy rubbish for 2+ days in my tiny kitchen, during the hot summer, or do I bung it in the hatch and inflict it upon my neighbours".

It's a fair point that Nick raises. However, in the event of very smelly rubbish, why don't we be considerate and take it down ourselves to the large black bins in the streets surrounding the Square. It ain't difficult.

I couldn't agree more Brendan - and let's not forget that there is still an area reserved for Household waste sacks in our very own basement skip area - for those for whom this is closer.

Ive recently arrived so cant comment about the past but from what I have seen so far the management seem to be doing all they can to help us help ourselves with environmental issues that we should all be concerned about. In my last block we had no recycling facilities at all, let alone some hired help to collect it from your own flat door. Well done to whoever got this off the ground (DSTA, BDC or whoever) and got the management to take the issue so seriously.

We moved in a week ago, and I've been trying to find out what we can recycle (food waste for composting?, cardboard, juice packets, clothes?), and whether we need to put it in special bags - can anyone help me?

Rupert - Welcome to the Square. You should contact Marina in the reception area and ask her to explain. There is a Westminster Council recycling bag that you should have to put everything in. It says fairly clearly what's what on it. You could also look at the article on the DSTA website: www.dsta.co.uk/cgi-bin/contents_view.pl?ID=982Since you mention cardboard juice packets - these are not part of the scheme operating in the Square - but there is a special black bin for them as you round the corner into Claverton Street on the west side of Pimlico School.
